Working "style"
The limits imposed on my mobility have necessitated a careful analysis and selection of
a feasible, yet effective and productive "working style" deviating from the usual way of
discharging my type of engagements.
In short, it can be labelled “online, but offsite” with face-to-face contacts to a large
extent replaced by technology enabled communication (advanced search and
information gathering tools, collaborative computing, virtual meetings, video- and audio
conferencing, extensive usage of mind mapping techniques for brainstorming,
sanitizing, selection and documentation).
Initially this produces a certain level of unease with my clients, and requires a high
level of as yet unsubstantiated trust.
But over time, instead of being a draw back, this “modus operandi” has proven to
deliver considerable, unexpected benefits, commending it even if circumstances were
different, e.g.
-
Significant reduction in unproductive but partly billable time and costs (travel
and lodging, unavailability, context switching)
-
Minimal disruption of the client’s own operational environment
-
No visibility where confidentiality is a prime concern
-
Scheduling flexibility.
